Please quickly discuss with your team our BIG 5 items that we absolutely, positively, MUST have in order to survive on Mars.

Now please suggest a way to provide for each of those items ON MARS!

I asked you to pay particular attention to the space-suit that our hero wore during The Martian:

Do you agree that the description "Space Suit" is appropriate here? Why or why not?

 

 

Consider an actual Space Suit (by the way, it may surprise you to know that it takes something like 4 hours to actually get into one of those. Oh and you can't do it by yourself, you'll need assistance from at least one other person!

The costume designers for the movie "The Martian" worked very closely with NASA to develop the Martian Surface Suit pictured here.

It may surprise you to know that we still HAVE NOT actually developed a functional Martian Surface suit like that... why do you suppose that is?

UNIT PROJECT:

We've learned that each of our BIG 5 is absolutely, positively ESSENTIAL for humans to exist, let along survive and THRIVE on Mars.

This project will help us show how each of those BIG 5 are interconnected.

Find a 'Mind Map' software such as Lucid Charts, Coggle, Mind Mup (the free version) or similar:

Each of our Big 5 represents a 'node'.

• Each of those nodes must be a different color
• Each node must connect to each of the other nodes
• The line connecting one node to another must be the same color as the starting node
• The line connecting one node to another node must end in an arrow to the connected node
